A Brief Introduction to Datong City Wall

Datong City Wall is located in the downtown area of Datong. The ancient city covers an area of 3.28 square kilometers with a square outline. The existing city wall was built by Xu Da, a Great General of the Ming Dynasty, in the 5th year of the Hongwu Reign of the Ming Dynasty (1372 AD) on the basis of the old city of Han, Wei, Tang, Liao, Jin and Yuan dynasties. The city wall is 14 meters high, 12 meters wide at the top, 18 meters wide at the bottom, and 7.2 kilometers long. There are four main city gates, namely Heyang Gate (the East Gate), Yongtai Gate (the South Gate), Qingyuan Gate (the West Gate), and Wuding Gate (the North Gate). There are also a series of military facilities such as the moat, drawbridges, gate towers, archery towers, barbicans, watchtowers, corner towers, and military control towers. It is an existing relatively complete ancient city wall in China. The ancient city wall, the moat, and the City Wall Park have now become the beautiful scenery in Datong, the thousand-year-old capital.
